They are exposed to soil corrosion, ground stress, and backfill impact, requiring external anti-corrosion coating.

Buried pipelines, such as oil and gas pressure pipelines and water/sewer pipes, are continuously exposed to corrosive soil, moisture, ground pressure, and backfill impact. Polyurea, with its high elongation of 300-450%, accommodates ground stress and thermal expansion. Its rapid curing allows for immediate backfilling after application, and when used in conjunction with a cathodic protection (CP) system, it minimizes coating defects.

It is an elastic coating material developed by Texaco in the early 1980s in the United States. It is widely used for waterproofing, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, and corrosion protection.
